Today the KCACR has some 1500 ringing members and is one of the largest territorial ringing associations in the country. Its aims are: the establishment, maintenance and encouragement of service ringing at churches in its area; the recognition of ringers as church workers; the proper care and use of bells and belfries; and the cultivation of the art of change ringing. As in 1880 our primary objective is to ensure that Sunday service ringing is maintained in churches in Kent, and to this end we concentrate our energies on the recruitment and training of new ringers, the encouragement of ringing as a duty and as a hobby, and the repair and maintenance of church bells. The KCACR holds ringing meetings, usually on Saturdays. In most areas, too, there are non-ringing events such as barn dances, trivia nights, car treasure hunts and so on, usually arranged to help raise money for bell restoration projects in Kent. The KCACR is one of some 70 ringing associations affiliated to the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers. Because of its geographical shape and size, the Association is divided into six Districts. The other five are Ashford, Canterbury, Lewisham, Rochester and Tonbridge. Each year on Easter Monday all six Districts join together for the Annual General Meeting when we ring, worship and lunch together, as well as holding a business meeting. The Maidstone District The District covers an area of about 150 square miles, stretching from the foot of the North Downs southwards to the Weald of Kent and taking in the valleys of the Rivers Medway, Teise, Beult and Len. There are 35 churches in the District with three or more ringable bells, plus one private ring of twelve. Most have a regular practice night, at which visitors are always welcome. Church bells are big things. They need bearings to swing on, ropes, pulleys, frames and so on. A new installation will probably last up to a hundred years with care, but interim maintenance work is essential - and not cheap. The KCACR is able to help with and advise on the maintenance, restoration and installation of church bells in Kent, but the money has to come from somewhere. The Bell Restoration Fund provides grants towards this work, and each District raises money towards the BRF. Whether you ring in the District or elsewhere - or even if you don’t ring at all - you can still help us by joining our 120 Club. Shares are only £10 per year, and you could win a monthly prize of £20 (£40 in June and December). For more information, including the latest winning numbers, go to the Maidstone District 120 Club’s own site by clicking on the damaged bell above, or EMail the Hon Promoter, Mal Williams, at Malwyn.Williams@blueyonder.co.uk There is more information about Bell Restoration generally on the KCACR website at kcacr.org.uk Contact Webmaster | ©2007 KCACR Maidstone District Last Updated 28 October, 2007",7);arrFiles[2]=new Array(4,"bookshop.html","2007-10-31","KCACR Maidstone District Online - Links","","","skip to: page content | links on this page | site navigation | footer (site information) KCACR Maidstone District Online Home Whats On? For an overview of the different types of event click on the appropriate link, or click on Calendar for a list of Maidstone District events for the rest of 2007 and the early part of 2008. Further details of the more imminent events can be obtained by clicking on the link in the calendar. Alternatively you can find out more by E-Mailing the District Secretary Ringing Events Training Events Social Events Contacts Current Calender Ringing Events On the second Saturday in January, April, and July there are Quarterly Meetings , but don \'t be put off by the word meetings: there is an informal business meeting, but it usually only lasts about ten minutes. The usual format is ringing from 5pm to 8pm, with a break between 6.30pm - 7pm for tea and the informal business meeting. At the Annual District Meeting (second Saturday in October) there is a longer, more formal, meeting when we need to elect District Officers for the coming year. Information on arrangements for District Meetings is available from the District Secretary. Running of the ringing at Meetings is the responsibility of the Ringing Masters. In June and November the events take the form of Striking Contests . The method contest is held on the second Saturday in June, and the winning band goes forward to represent Maidstone District in a county-wide Striking Contest in September. The Call-change Competition which takes place in November is designed to encourage the less-experienced bands, along with those unable to ring methods. As well as the winner \'s shield there is also a trophy for the most improved band over the previous year. Training Events Training is undertaken at tower, District or County level depending on individual needs. Basic handling and simple method ringing is generally taught at a ringer \'s own tower. Beyond the basics the Ringing Masters are normally able to assist, and District Training Days are arranged on an ad hoc basis. The simulator at All Saints, Staplehurst is available on request for towers/bands wishing to have additional or special practices. At these practices the clappers are tied, so there is no sound outside the tower, but sensors on the wheels produce realistic computer-generated bell sounds. Therefore at the initial attempts the ringer need not be put off by poor striking or by having to pay attention to the striking - which reduces concentration on the new skill being learnt - simply because there is no sound on the outside of the tower. However in the inside of the tower the bells are rung as normal with normal bell sounds. For further information or to book a practice session on the simulator contact Chris Bassett at chrisnsuebassett@tiscali.co.uk The County Training Subcommittee have a wide ranging training programme including a Management, Teaching and Maintenance Weekend, Bell Control Clinics and courses to advance specific ringing skills. For information on County Training Events contact the County Training Officer, James Hardy, at trg@kcacr.org.uk Social Events In the Maidstone District we recognise that to many of our members there are other things in life apart from being at the end of a bell-rope, so we include several social events in the Calendar too. These will be announced as and when they are organised. In addition, many ringers organize their own social events, often to raise funds for their tower. Click here to see what’s coming up. Only three bands entered this year \'s competition, held at Chart Sutton on Saturday 17th June, making it the least well supported for some years. The successful band is pictured above, with the shield and the judges. Our judges this year were Monty Gilbert, well known to some of the older ringers in the District and now ringing in the Canterbury District, and Paul Barton, Canterbury District Ringing Master. Unusually, as well as the results (below) they also gave the numbers of clean rows rung by each band. Our thanks to them for coming over to judge the contest for us, and to Chart Sutton for hosting the contest and providing refreshments. Despite the small entry it was, all in all, quite a sociable morning - not least because we had to huddle indoors from the rain! Afternoon ringing was followed by traditional Evensong, led by the Staplehurst choir, and then a delicious tea provided by the local ringers. The meeting itself was rather low key, with only one change in officership – Daniel Brady replaces Graham Heath as one of the joint Ringing Masters. See the District Committee page for details. Perhaps the high spot was the presentation of an engraved tankard and a cheque to Roy Barclay to mark his 25 years as Editor of The Belfry. A picture of a rather gobsmacked Roy being presented with the gifts will be posted on this page shortly. County 6 Bell Competition a close thing! It was a lovely sunny day for the County6 Bell Striking Competition on Saturday, 22nd September and a chance to ring on the lovely ring of 6 at Chevening inthe Tonbridge District. Five out of the six districts were represented, with Aylesford – drawn to ring third - proudly representing Maidstone District. All the ringing was of a very high standard and judges Robin and Gillian Leale from Kingston-on-Thames commented that there was not a single method mistake throughout the whole competition. It was all very close with only 11 faultsseparating first and last places. Although we came 5th with 39 faults it was nevertheless a good effort by the bandwho thoroughly enjoyed the experience. For the full results see the main KCACR site. Dissapointing Turnout at Linton Only about a dozen people turned up for the District meeting at Linton on Wednesday 12th September, although it must be said that there was the rival attraction of an England football match on TV. Consequently it wasn’t possible to ring Rutland, although we did manage the other special method, Plain Bob Major, along with Grandsire and a course of Stedman Triples. Double Norwich, Nearly at Harrietsham Again we had joint venues for the Summer Quarterly on the morning of Saturday 14th July. First on the agenda was ringing on the six at Harrietsham, followed by the business meeting. Moving on to Harrietsham, a variety of methods was rung by the 20 or so people who attended but unfortunately a course of Double Norwich Major (the day’s special method) was unsuccessful. Aylesford win district striking competition Aylesford made it a double by winning the District Striking Contest , to go with the Call Change Trophy they won back in November. A different sort of Surprise Surprise at a practice is one thing but at Aylesford on Monday,19th February, one member of thebandhad a surprise of his own, when he waspresented with a rather special birthday cake. With news reaching the ringers that Gordon Hunt was aboutto reach the \'diamond \' age of....60, we thought he deserved some special attention that night. So after tucking in to some delicious cake, it was champagne all round (and lemonade for the kids) with a bit of ringing thrown in. Happy birthday Gordon. Sartorial elegance in the belfry Aylesford must surely have had the best-dressed visitors ever to enter a bell chamber! On 30th June Aylesford held their village festival. Despite the atrocious weather, attendance was good both at the recreation ground where most of the events were being staged as well as in the church where the WI were parachuting teddies from the tower. Part of the festival included displays of Morris Dancing. Two of the Bishop Gundulf Morris Dancers looked in and enquired as to whether the tower was opened to visitors. Officially it was not, but always looking for a photo opportunity Tina agreed to take the two brave souls up to the bell chamber. The photos show the intrepid dancers, Claire and Ian in full Morris attire - complete with bells on their clogs and yes, Ian did have his tankard securely fastened to his waistband too! Tower News Congratulations to two of our ringers: Daniel Brady called his first quarter as Conductor on 15th April, whilst for his younger brother Adam it was his first quarter on an inside bell. Historical Notes The earliest records of settlement in Staplehurst date from the 8th century, so a Christian community has been living on the site - a ridge of Paludina limestone rising some fifty feet above the flat Weald - since at least that date. Although the exact date of its foundation is not known there has been a church here since the eleventh century. The present structure is predominantly of Kentish ragstone and most of it dates from the mid-1400s. The six-buttressed tower at the west end of the church has five stages: the ground floor - the main entrance to the church; the ringing chamber; the clock chamber containing the clock by Thwaites and Reed of Croydon (1888); the bell chamber with its ring of ten bells hung in a galvanised steel frame; and the roof of timber with lead cladding. There was formerly a shingle spire, which blew down in a gale in 1673. Still to be found in the bell chamber is the timber trusswork that supported the spire. These massive oak beams included dragon beams at the corners which suggest that the spire overhung the walls to a certain extent, and that the present battlements were only constructed after the collapse of the spire. There was originally a ring of five bells in the tower. These were partly recast at Whitechapel Foundry by Mears and Stainbank and completely rehung in a new (but not very well designed) oak frame in 1885. The old fourth cast by Joseph Hatch of Ulcombe in 1605 was retained and together they formed a new ring of eight. An old local tradition states that at the rehanging some scandal was caused by two horses from the manor being brought into the church to haul the bells up into the bell chamber by walking up the aisle harnessed to the hoisting rope, but practical considerations make this unlikely. A special service of dedication was conducted by the Bishop of Hereford, who was connected with the patronage of the living by being a quondam fellow of St John \'s College Cambridge, on St Mark \'s Day 1885. The eight bells were rehung by Alfred Bowell of Ipswich in 1930 with partly new fittings and, apart from routine maintenance, nothing more was done for nearly half a century. Then, in 1979, minor works were undertaken, comprising the replacement of slider boards, roller boxes and wheel braces. However, by the late 1980s the bells were becoming increasingly difficult to ring, and it became clear that this good old-fashioned country eight were in need of major restoration. The bearings were worn out. The frame was not well designed, it was propped up on emergency steel beams, was rotten in places and had too much movement. The bells were, unsurprisingly, hard to ring and it was very difficult to teach learners. In 1992, a restoration appeal was launched to enable the bells to be rehung in a new steel frame with all new fittings. The rehanging was finally accomplished in 1997 along with the addition of two new trebles, the gift of a parishioner in memory of her late husband. The restored and augmented ring of ten was dedicated on Easter Day 1997. Would you like to learn to ring at this tower?
