County 8 bell Striking Competition

8bellThis year’s County 8-bell Striking Contest was held at Westerham in the Tonbridge District on 28th June. Five of the six Districts were represented, each ringing a test piece of 210 Single Oxford Bob Triples.

Clearly the home advantage paid off, as the winners this year were Tonbridge District with just 14 faults. Runners up were Lewisham District with 26 faults, with Ashford right on their tails to finish third. The full results appear below.

We finished some way behind in fifth place, but it must be said that many of our District's top ringers were unavailable for various reasons. That is to take nothing away from the great team effort by the eight who did ring: Sallyann Barclay 1, Sue Gullett 2, Kath White 3, Malcolm Hitchcock 4, Chris Saunders 5, Roy Barclay (Cond) 6, Richard Barclay 7, Mal Williams 8. As can be seen from the picture right, they all seem quite happy afterwards (maybe relief that it was all over!)

Winners Tonbridge District 14 faults
2nd Lewisham District 26 faults
3rd Ashford District 27 faults
4th Canterbury District 30 faults
5th Maidstone District 60 faults

2008 Striking Competition Resultssc2008

This year’s District Striking Contest was held at Bearsted on 14th June with five bands taking part, representing four towers. The fifth band was a "scratch" band made up of some of the District's promising younger ringers.

The winners this year, by a considerable margin, were All Saints' Maidstone who are pictured right with the winners shield and the judges. They finished with just 25 faults, some 17 less than their nearest rivals Aylesford with 42. Staplehurst were third, followed by the young scratch band and then Leeds. The full results appear below. All Saints' Maidstone now go forward to represent our District at the County 6 Bell Competition at Aldington in September

Our judges were our friends Frank and Catherine Lewis from neighbouring Tonbridge District. We are particularly grateful to them for coming over to judge a second successive contest for us - they also judged the Call Change Contest last November. We are also grateful to the Bearsted ringers for hosting the contest and providing refreshments.

Winners All Saints' Maidstone 25 faults
2nd Aylesford 42 faults
3rd Staplehurst 55 faults
4th Scratch band 60 faults
5th Leeds 71 faults
